Lampmakeriet didn’t begin with a business idea. It began with a corner of a living room that never felt cozy.

Kerstin had lived in the house for six months before she understood what was wrong. It wasn’t the furniture. It wasn’t the color of the walls. It was that she never sat there once it got dark outside. The ceiling light shone straight down, evenly and coldly, turning the room into a waiting room. Everything was visible. Nothing invited you in.

One autumn evening, she placed a floor lamp in the corner. That same evening, she stayed there for three hours with a book she had already read. Nothing else in the room had changed. Only the light.

Why light makes such a big difference

It’s no coincidence that some rooms draw us in while others push us away.

We are drawn to warm, low-level light — much like people throughout history have gathered around a fire rather than beneath an open sky. Light from above keeps us alert and ready to go somewhere else. That’s useful in a kitchen in the middle of the day and wrong in a living room at nine in the evening.

That’s why we prefer to talk about where the lamp should go rather than what it’s called. A home rarely needs more light. It needs light in the right places, with darkness left where darkness serves a purpose.

A room doesn’t become cozy simply by being lit. It becomes cozy when it is allowed to keep its shadows.

How we choose

After that floor lamp came another. And another. Room by room, the cold was replaced with warmth, and the home began to be used again — the kitchen table in the evenings, the reading nook, the staircase people had previously hurried past.

Friends began asking where the lamps came from. Eventually, the answer felt obvious: there should be a place where someone had already done the searching for you.

Every lamp in our selection has passed a single question:

Would I want to turn this on in my own home, on a Tuesday evening in November?

If the answer is no, it isn’t here. That’s the entire selection principle, and it’s intentionally small-scale. We’re not trying to have everything.
